Source List Editor

Return to OPAL home page

This tool is provided to facilitate the preparation of proposals. The source lists are not submitted as part of an ATNF telescope application but they can be loaded into the observations tables.

The ATOA can be used to search the Compact Array and Mopra archives for sources listed and selected in a source list. Please note that this search can handle a maximum of 20 sources per query.

Tip: To select multiple rows, hold down the Control key and move your mouse over the source names (do not hold the mouse button(s) down.) To clear a selection, hold down the Shift key and move the mouse over the source names.

Instructions

Sources
To add a source simply type its name. New source rows will be added automatically as you type. Click delete to remove a source.
Name resolution
OPAL will automatically attempt to resolve any name you type. The names of catalogues in which a source is found will turn green. Hover your mouse over the catalogue to see the resolved position and click to use the position in your source list
Coordinate systems
OPAL allows you to switch between galactic and equatorial coordinate modes via the coordinate system switch button. Any coordinates already entered in one system will be automatically converted to the new coordinate system. Please note that the epoch selector in equatorial coordinate mode simply marks the epoch of the entered coordinates. OPAL will not automatically transform equatorial coordinates when you change the epoch.
Coordinate format
Sexagesimal coordinate formats must be fully specified. Right ascension must be formatted as Hours:Minutes:Seconds or decimal hours and declination as Degrees:Arcminutes:Arcseconds or decimal degrees. Spaces are permitted as delimiters. Galactic coordinates must be specified as decimal degrees.
Custom columns
Click "add column" to add additional columns to your source list. You may give your columns individual titles. OPAL supports (but does not require) up to 8 additional columns.
Saving

Choose a save format and click save to save your source list locally. This will save all of the rows that are currently in your source table (regardless of whether they are selected or not).

The OPAL save format supports all of the source list editors features. The ATCA sched-catalogue format is limited in features (no custom field names, equatorial coordinates only) so it is recommended that this only be used when an export to sched format is necessary.

Opening an existing source list
Enter your file name or browse to it and click "open"

Load an existing source list file in OPAL or ATCA sched-catalogue format. Files ending in .cat will be interpreted as a ATCA sched-catalogue file — all other files will be interpreted as an OPAL source list
